Customer Profile Name Updates from Widget Submissions

Samantha Brown Updated by Samantha Brown

When your customers, advocates, or friends submit their names directly through Friendbuy widgets such as the Advocate Referral Widget or Friend Incentive Widget their names are now automatically captured and added to their Customer Service profiles. This ensures your Customer Service profile data stays complete and accurate without requiring additional customer profile updates.

Name Capture Sources

Customer profiles now receive name data from two sources:

  1. Widget Submissions — Names entered directly into Friendbuy widgets (Advocate landing pages, Friend landing pages, etc.)

  1. Track Events — Names sent to Friendbuy via customer track or purchase track events

Previously, only track events updated the Name field.

Automatic Profile Updates

When someone submits their name through a widget:

  1. Friendbuy identifies the correct customer profile using existing identifiers, email or customer ID
  2. The Name field in their Customer Profile is created or updated with the submitted value
  3. The update appears in the Customer Service portal and accessible in customer data via APIs
Name Update Priority Rules

When a profile already has a name, Friendbuy applies these priority rules to decide whether to update it:

Scenario

What Happens

Profile has no name

Widget submission is always written to the Name field

Widget submission vs. track event

Client-sent track event wins. Track events are your system of record and take priority over self-entered widget data

Multiple widget submissions

The most recent valid submission updates the name (only if the current name also came from a widget)

Empty or blank submission

Ignored. An existing valid name is never overwritten by a blank or whitespace-only submission

Same name submitted again

No change. Duplicate submissions don't trigger updates or create redundant audit entries

Track events (client-sent data) always have priority over widget submissions. Within the same source, most recent name value takes precedence.
Viewing Updated Names

In the Customer Service Portal > Customer Lookup section, customer profiles now display names from both widget submissions and track events. To review a customer's current name:

  1. Open Customer Service from your Friendbuy dashboard
  2. Select Customer Lookup
  3. Search for the customer by an identifier such as email or customer ID
  4. The Name field shows the current value from the highest-priority source
Name Update Scenarios
Scenario 1: New Customer Joins via Widget

Situation: A friend submits their name through an incentive widget, but no track event has been received yet.

Result: Their Customer Service profile is created with the submitted name, even without a track event.

Scenario 2: Name Update from Widget

Situation: A customer's profile shows "Bob" (from a widget submission), and a new widget submission provides "Robert."

Result: The Name field updates to "Robert" because the latest widget submission is more recent.

Scenario 3: Track Event Overrides Widget

Situation: A customer's profile shows "Sarah" (from a widget), and then a track event arrives with the name "Sara."

Result: The Name field updates to "Sara" because track events have higher priority than widget submissions.

Scenario 4: Widget Can't Override Track Event

Situation: A customer's profile shows "Michael" (from a track event sent yesterday), and they submit "Mike" via widget today.

Result: The Name field remains "Michael" because it was set through the track event which is the priority source.

Notes
  • Comparison is case-insensitive. Submitting the same name in different cases (e.g., "john" vs. "John") is treated as a duplicate and won't trigger an update.
  • Works with all in-scope widgets. Name capture applies to any Friendbuy widgets where users can enter their name.
  • Applied to advocates and friends. The feature works for both program advocates and friends.
  • No manual sync needed. Updates are automatic and appear in Customer Service.
