Ensure your Ordergroove and Shopify accounts are mapped to the same store. Also enable Shopify Webhooks through Friendbuy to track recurring purchase activity.

Advocate Rewards Configuration

For referral program rewards through Ordergroove you can choose to reward your Advocate with an Ordergroove Discount. This will allow you to auto apply a discount to a users active subscription.

  1. When configuring advocate rewards, select Ordergroove Discount as your reward type

  1. Specify the discount dollar amount (currently USD only)
If the discount amount exceeds the cost of the next subscription order, any remaining balance automatically rolls over to subsequent subscription orders.

Friend Incentives Setup

To enhance your Ordergroove setup, our Shopify Integration enables you to tailor how coupons are applied. You have the flexibility to apply coupons to Subscription & One-Time Products, only One-Time Products, or exclusively to Subscriptions. These settings can be adjusted when configuring your Shopify Coupon Rules for Friend Incentives.

There are three options for how your coupons can be applied:

  • Subscription & One-Time Products – Customers can use the incentive for either type of purchase
  • One-Time Products Only – Incentive applies to non-subscription purchases exclusively
  • Subscriptions Exclusively – Incentive applies only to subscription products

Loyalty Program: Reward Subscribers Based on Loyalty Earning Events

Loyalty programs allow you to automatically reward subscription customers with points, discounts, or free products triggered by specific subscription actions. Set up earning events to engage subscribers and increase program participation.

Supported Subscription Events

The following earning events tie rewards directly to customer subscription actions:

Subscription Activation

Customers earn rewards when they initiate a new subscription. This event triggers once per new subscription and is an excellent opportunity to welcome new subscribers into your loyalty program.

Reward options:

  • Loyalty points
  • Ordergroove subscription discounts (auto-applied to the next renewal)
  • Free products from your Shopify catalog with optional fallback items if inventory runs low

Subscription Renewal

Reward customers for maintaining active subscriptions with flexible renewal-based earning events.

Renewal scheduling options:

  • Specific renewal: Reward only on the 2nd renewal, 4th renewal, etc.
  • Ranged renewals: Reward on the 2nd through 6th renewals
  • Recurring renewals: Reward on all renewals starting from the 3rd (or any specified number)

Example: Set up events to reward the 1st, 3rd, and 5th renewals at increasing point values to encourage long-term retention.

Reward options:

  • Loyalty points
  • Ordergroove subscription discounts (auto-applied to the subscription order)
  • Free products with optional fallbacks

Subscription Reactivation

When customers reactivate a previously canceled subscription, trigger a loyalty reward to thank them for returning.

Key behavior: Reactivating customers retain all previous rewards and loyalty points they earned before cancellation.

Reward options:

  • Loyalty points
  • Ordergroove subscription discounts
  • Free products with optional fallback alternatives

Redemption & Auto-Apply Behavior

Loyalty rewards configured with Ordergroove benefits are automatically applied when customers redeem points:

  • Subscription Discounts: Automatically applied to the customer's next active subscription order in Ordergroove
  • Free Products: Selected from your Shopify catalog; if that item is out of stock, the fallback product is auto-applied instead
  • Subscription Status & Reward Tier Visibility

When you set up subscription-based earning events in your loyalty program, the loyalty widget intelligently displays reward tiers based on each customer's current subscription status. This ensures customers see and can redeem rewards they're eligible for.

How It Works

For Customers with Active Subscriptions: All loyalty reward tiers display normally and are fully interactive. Customers can view, earn, and redeem both standard rewards (one-time purchase discounts) and subscription-based rewards without restrictions.

For Customers Without Active Subscriptions:

  • Standard reward tiers (e.g., discounts on one-time purchases) remain visible and clickable as usual
  • Subscription-based reward tiers appear grayed out with disabled redeem buttons
  • A helper message can be configured near disabled earning events to note "Requires an active Ordergroove subscription"

Real-Time Status Checking

Subscription eligibility is verified in real time (or at page load) through your Ordergroove integration:

  • When a customer loads the loyalty widget, their subscription status is checked against Ordergroove
  • If a customer's subscription status changes such as activating a new subscription or canceling an existing one the widget reflects the updated state the next time they load the page or refresh
  • Customers cannot redeem subscription-tier rewards if they don't have an active subscription; no loyalty points are deducted if they attempt to interact with a grayed-out tier
If the Ordergroove API becomes temporarily unavailable and subscription status cannot be verified, subscription-based reward tiers will default to hidden as a precaution. This prevents customers from accidentally viewing rewards they may not be eligible for. Once Ordergroove connectivity is restored, tiers will display normally on the customer's next page load.
