How to Trigger a Text to Remind Referred Friends to Redeem Their Incentives (Through Braze)

Overview

When a Referred Friend qualifies for an incentive through the referral program, Friendbuy displays their coupon code on the onsite incentive widget and sends a Friend Incentive email containing the incentive amount and coupon code. Friendbuy also syncs distributed incentive codes to Braze as custom attributes on the new customer’s profile.

If the Referred Friend has not yet redeemed their incentive, you can use Braze to send an automated SMS reminder encouraging them to use their coupon code before it expires.

This guide walks through how to set up a Braze Canvas that sends a personalized SMS reminder using the incentive value and the coupon code synced from Friendbuy.

Step 1: Create a New Campaign

1. Navigate to Canvas

In Braze:

  • Go to Messaging → Canvas
  • Click Create Canvas
2. Choose Build From Scratch

Select Start from Scratch.

3. Name Your Canvas

Example:

Referred Friend Incentive Redemption Reminder SMS

Step 2: Select the Entry Trigger

This SMS flow is triggered by the Friend Incentive Earned event.

In Braze, under Entry Type:
  1. Choose Action-Based
  2. Search for and select the event:
    • friendbuy_friend_incentive_earned
      (Event naming may vary slightly by integration.)

Click Save Trigger.

Step 3: Add a Time Delay

You want to allow a short window after the incentive is earned before sending the reminder.

To add the delay:
  1. Click + below your trigger
  2. Select Delay
  3. Configure your reminder delay
    • Example: 3 days

Step 4: Add the SMS Step

  1. Click + under the Delay module
  2. Select SMS

This adds your reminder text message.

Step 5: Write the SMS Reminder Message

1. Open the SMS editor
  • Click the SMS step
  • Select Edit Message
2. Insert the Incentive Value

Use Braze’s Liquid syntax for the reward amount:

{{custom_attribute.${friend_incentive_value}}}

(Your actual attribute name may also be referred_friend_coupon_value depending on your setup.)

Be sure to include the currency symbol manually:

  • $ for USD
  • £, €, etc.
3. Insert the Coupon Code

Use the synced coupon code attribute:

{{custom_attribute.${referred_friend_coupon_code}}}
Example SMS with both dynamic fields:

Your reward of ${{custom_attribute.${friend_incentive_value}}} is waiting! Redeem your coupon code: {{custom_attribute.${referred_friend_coupon_code}}}. Treat yourself before it expires.

This message dynamically pulls:

  • the correct incentive value
  • the exact coupon code assigned to the Referred Friend

Step 6: Activate Your SMS Message

Activate individual message
  1. Open the SMS step
  2. Change the Message Status to Active
Launch the entire Canvas
  1. Click Launch Canvas
  2. Review the summary
  3. Confirm launch

You’re Ready to Drive More Incentive Redemptions!

Once live, Braze will automatically send personalized SMS reminders to Referred Friends who have earned but not yet redeemed their incentive. This increases redemption rates and helps you maximize the impact of your referral program.
