Configuring Advocate Rewards by Subscription Status (Recharge Integration)

Samantha Brown Updated by Samantha Brown

Overview

Friendbuy allows you to configure different advocate rewards based on whether the referring customer is an active subscriber or a non-subscriber. This gives you the flexibility to offer subscription-specific incentives (like a free renewal) to subscribers, while offering non-subscribers rewards that make sense for their purchasing behavior (like coupon codes or gift cards).

This guide walks you through how to set up and manage these reward configurations in your campaign settings.

How It Works

When an advocate successfully refers a friend, Friendbuy checks the advocate’s subscription status by querying their Recharge account. Based on that status, the system applies the reward you’ve configured for that segment:

•       Subscriber: The advocate has an active subscription. They can receive subscription-specific rewards such as credit toward their next renewal or a free subscription period, in addition to all standard reward types.

•       Non-Subscriber: The advocate does not have an active subscription. They can receive rewards like coupon codes, discounts, gift cards, and account credit.

•       Any: Use this option to apply the same reward to all advocates regardless of subscription status.

Setting Up Advocate Rewards

Follow these steps to configure rewards based on subscription status:

  1. Open Reward Settings

In your Friendbuy account, navigate to Referral > Campaigns > Advocate Reward. You’ll see the standard configuration fields including the reward trigger.

  1. Select the Advocate Subscription Status

Use the Advocate subscription status dropdown to choose which segment you’re configuring a reward for. You have three options:

•       Subscriber – Configure a reward specifically for advocates with active subscriptions.

•       Non-subscriber – Configure a reward specifically for advocates without active subscriptions.

•       Any – Apply the same reward to all advocates regardless of their subscription status.

  1. Choose the Reward Type

After selecting the subscription status, choose a reward type from the dropdown. The available reward types will vary depending on the subscription status you selected.

Subscriber reward options:

When you select Subscriber, you’ll see the full set of reward types, including subscription-specific options like Recharge Discount.

Non-subscriber reward options:

When you select Non-subscriber, subscription-specific rewards are hidden. You’ll see reward types that can be applied without an active subscription.

  1. Configure Reward Details

Once you’ve selected a reward type, additional configuration fields will appear based on your selection. For example, if you choose Coupon Code, you’ll be prompted to select a Code Bank.

Complete all required fields for the reward type you’ve chosen, then save your campaign settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Friendbuy determine subscription status?

Friendbuy checks the Advocate’s account for active subscriptions via Recharge at the time the referral reward is triggered. If an active subscription is found, they are classified as a subscriber.

What happens if subscription status can’t be determined?

If the system is unable to verify subscription status, the advocate is treated as a non-subscriber by default to ensure they still receive a reward.

Can I use the same reward type for both segments?

Yes. You can choose the same reward type (for example, Coupon Code) for both subscribers and non-subscribers, with different amounts or configurations for each.
