Create Advocate and Friend Segments in Attentive to Personalize Content + Messaging

When Friendbuy sends phone numbers captured through the referral program to Attentive, we also send information about whether the phone number belongs to an Advocate (Referrer) or a Referred Friend. As a best practice, we recommend creating these segments in Attentive so you can send personalized, triggered messages to each segment of subscribers

Creating an Advocate Segment

Step 1: You will need to ask your Attentive Customer Success Manager to setup two new custom subscriber tags your Attentive account: one called ADVOCATE and one called FRIEND (capitalization matters here)

Step 2: in your Attentive account, navigate to Segments and click Create a Segment

Step 3: you will be prompted to choose a Segment Type.  Choose Dynamic Segment

Step 4: Choose Under the Add Subscribers dropdown, choose The segment a subscriber is in.

Step 5: Choose the conditions Subscriber is ADVOCATE and then click Create.

You should see the ADVOCATE subscriber tag in the dropdown if your Attentive CSM has created these custom subscriber tags for you.

Step 6: Name your Segment and add a description.

Name your Segment Friendbuy Advocates to delineate where these subscribers are coming from and who they are

Creating a Referred Friend Segment

Step 1: Navigate to Segments and click Create Segment

Step 2: Choose the Segment type called Dynamic Segment and click Create

Step 3: Choose Under the Add Subscribers dropdown, choose The segment a subscriber is in.

Step 4: Choose the conditions Subscriber is FRIEND and then click Create.

You should see the FRIEND subscriber tag in the dropdown if your Attentive CSM has created these custom subscriber tags for you.

Step 5: Name your Segment and add a description.

Name your Segment Friendbuy Referred Friends to delineate where these subscribers are coming from and who they are

Step 7: You can see your newly created  Segments in your Attentive dashboard

Once these segments are created, new subscribers will start populating in each segment, depending whether the subscriber came from a Friendbuy Advocate Referral Widget or a Friend Incentive Widget

When and how do phone numbers get added to Attentive?

  1. User enters their phone number either on a Friendbuy Advocate Referral Widget or a Friend Incentive Widget, at which point it gets captured in Friendbuy
  2. Friendbuy sends the phone number to Attentive's subscribers API
  3. Attentive sends a double-opt-in message to the user on your behalf, asking if the user would like to subscribe to SMS messages sent by your company
  4. If the user replies "Y", the phone number will get added to the designated Attentive subscriber profile
  5. If the user does nothing or replies "STOP", then the phone number will not be sent to Attentive
